Guy Lonechild has stepped down as chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations after accepting a severance package amid pressure from high-level officials at a meeting on the White Cap First Nation.

Lonechild came to the meeting hoping to win over decision makers and move the organization forward with his 14-point plan.

But observers inside the chiefs assembly say he was never even given the chance to speak.

Word of the buyout came after hours of private negotiations with lawyers and FSIN members. Sources who know Lonechild say the deal wasn't what he had in mind.

While Lonechild's future with the FSIN may be decided, it isn't clear who will lead the organization going forward, or what direction it will take.
