Regina police are now fighting crime in high definition.

A new automated fingerprint identification system is giving police a clearer picture of the prints criminals leave behind.

The system, manufactured by MorphoTrak, uses cutting-edge biometrics technology to provide a higher definition image of fingerprints.

It also allows police to search the fingerprint database faster. Police say a search that previously took as long as 12 minutes can now be done within two minutes.

And for the first time, Regina police will be able to capture and search palm print records.

Police say they will also use the technology to search latent prints from cold case files again to see if a match can be made.

Regina, Calgary and Edmonton police shared the cost of the $1.38 million. Regina police use the system under a memorandum of understanding, at a cost of about $45,000.

All three police services pay annual fees based on the percentage of records they have in the database and the number of searches they conduct each year.
