The idea of putting a dome over a proposed Regina stadium has been scrapped in favour of an open-air plan.

The city also revealed Friday that it is looking to build the $278.2-million facility at Evraz Place, rather than on the Canadian Pacific rail yards, as originally proposed. The replacement for Mosaic Stadium would have a seating capacity of 33,000.

In addition, the current stadium site and about half of the CP land would be redeveloped into 700 affordable housing units, as well as commercial, retail and green spaces. The city is still in talks with CP about buying the land.

A majority of the funding for the billion-dollar revitalization initiative would come from the private sector. The province has been asked to kick in $230 million, while the city would contribute $88.3 million. Another $30 million is being requested from the federal government.
